CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

THEY DID NOT ARRIVE in Lydford with Geoffrey’s body headfirst over the horse’s back, but it was a near thing, and Henry did have to resort to tying Geoffrey’s hands to the pommel of his saddle as the loss of blood threatened his ability to remain upright. But as they reached the last hill just before the village, Geoffrey roused himself enough to insist that his squire undo the bindings. He would not arrive at his own castle trussed up like a prisoner.

The portcullis remained down until the two of them were close enough to be identified, in compliance with the instructions Geoffrey had left with the guards to open it only to those known to them. As they waited for the gate to rise, Geoffrey looked at it and it seemed to waver, as if it were not quite solid. What the...? He blinked, and his eyelids felt heavy and his vision became white about the edges. Vaguely he heard Henry gasp, and followed the boy’s horrified gaze to look down at his leg, crimson with blood from thigh to toe, with sinister red droplets dripping from the toe of his boot to puddle in the dust below him. As if from very far away, he heard a shout, looked up and saw Edmund running toward him, looking terrified. What is the damn hurry, he thought irrationally. Geoffrey’s head swam, his stomach began to rebel almost as if he were seasick, and the world began to tilt and sway as a roaring filled his ears. Then it all went black, and he pitched unconscious from the saddle.
